LOOK FOR AMAZONISTAS
We will have a table at the 4th Annual Shamanism Conference held in Iquitos, Peru beginning on the 19th of July. The Amazonistas web site is scheduled to go online the 20th at noon Iquitos time.
Marco Schneider of Amazon Action will be sharing the table with us and the ladies he works with from Puchano distrito will be selling healthy traditional food and Amazonistas will have cold beverages for sale. We also hope to prepare fresh, cold fruit in the morning.
We are looking for volunteers to help because our one representative is also translating at the conference (and ceremonies if you ask him nicely) so if you could offer him a bit of your time at the Amazonistas table you would be doing a lot of good.
We look forward to meeting you.
Many blessings to you all for your health and well being.

We are here in Iquitos, Peru for the month of May. Iquitos is north east in the country and the largest city that can only be reached by plane or boat. Brazil is not even a days trip up the river from this city. While here we met a few remarkable people who can truly be called amazonistas and have agreed to keep video journals of their projects which are benefitting the people and the forest.
We went first to Kapitari which is an hour boat ride and another hour hike outside of Iquitos near the pueblo Manacamiri. It is the vision of Lucho Culquitón and his hope that the people who live in the forest can learn the manner of farming and living there that is self sustaining, will not damage the soil and will provide for them with minimum dependence on the city.
We have given him a flip camera and charger for the batteries and are headed there today to show him how to use it since it is entirely in English. He has agreed to send us footage to keep everyone updated regarding his projects and work with the local pueblos.

Hello friends!Last year I saw Peru and Ecuador for the first time and was profoundly healed and guided through traditional medicine in both places. Like a lot of you I fell in love with the Amazon and the people and I was called to serve there.I have renounced my home, all my possessions, (taken vows and teachings with Traga Rimpoche at the Garchen Buddhist Institute in Arizona) and am going to Peru to to begin the work on Amazonistas which is filed here in the states as a 501c3 in Febriary 2008.
27 January 2008 — The decision was made to file as a non-profit.
25 January 2008 — I have been speaking with John Burrill of www.idiomlab.com about building the amazonistas site.
Received the first Flip Video Ultra camera on the 5th. It is more suitable than I had imagined! Compact and simple to use and the picture and sound quality exceed my expectations. I’m excited about sending it down to the first Amazonistas Moblogger.
Happy New Year everyone! All the best for the health and happiness of you and your family throughout the coming year!
Jorge Espinosa has been graciously lending his hard earned skills as a professional interpreter/translator (though trained for the courts and emergency rooms), and I am very grateful and appreciative of his time. Forgive me if I misspell the Spanish. If only I could say that in Spanish!
I’ve added a recording to the “Coming Soon” marker page for amazonistas.net. It is from July 2007 outside Iquitos, Peru, of Darwin Ruiz, seen here on left, singing traditional Shipibo Icaros in the jungle during a huachuma ceremony. Enjoy.

In the meantime, here’s a Pablo Neruda poem which, to me, reads like a love letter from the Amazon rainforest to all of us English to follow:
LXXXI From: ‘Cien sonetos de amor’
LXXXI From: ‘Cien sonetos de amor’
Already, you are mine.
Rest with your dream inside my dream.
Love, grief, labour, must sleep now.
Night revolves on invisible wheels and joined to me you are pure as sleeping amber.
No one else will sleep with my dream, love.
You will go we will go joined by the waters of time.
No other one will travel the shadows with me,only you, eternal nature, eternal sun, eternal moon.
Already your hands have opened their delicate fistsand let fall, without direction, their gentle signs,
you eyes enclosing themselves like two grey wings,
while I follow the waters you bring that take me onwards:
night, Earth, winds weave their fate, and already,
not only am I not without you, I alone am your dream.
